Description This very rare print shows a view on the fighting with the Portuguese and the local population at Rufisque and Portudal in West Africa, June 1601. The print is dedicated to Simon Parduyn, mayor of Middelburg, in the middle of the show is his family crest with motto and assignment. At the bottom left and right cartouches with inscriptions in Dutch. Mirror-image copies to the original illustrations of Floris Balthasarsz. Van Berckenrode in the Joris van Spilbergen journey to the East Indies in 1601-1604. No 1. Made by after an anonymous artist. Medium: engraving on handlaid (verge) paper. Sheet size: 23 x 17.5 cm (9.06 x 6.89 inch). Image size: 22.5 x 14.7 cm. (8.86 x 5.79 inch). Condition: good, given age. Brownish. Small hote restored in middle.
