Description This print shows a view on Vendemiaire-dag, on the fourth year of the French Revolution. Vendemiaire was the first month in the French Republican calendar and the first month of the autumn quarter. It started on the day of the autumnal equinox, which fell between 22 September and 24 September, inclusive. It thus ended between 21 October and 23 October. On that day there was a fight between soldiers near the church St. Roch, rue Honore. Plate number XII from the series of 15 pivotal moments in the French Revolution between 1789 and 1802. Biography engraver: Isidore-Stanislas Helman (1743-1806/1809), was a French draughtsman, engraver and printseller. He was born in Lille in 1743 where he received his early artistic training. His death date is uncertain. He died in Paris in either 1806 or in 1809. In Paris he studied with Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783), a draughtsman, engraver and etcher, and was one of his finest pupils. Helman was known especially for his engravings of genre scenes. Biography artist: Charles Monnet / Monet (1732-1808) was a French painter and illustrator, best known for illustrations of the French Revolution.
