Biography engraver: Jean Le Pautre (1618-1682) was a leading French engraver and ornamental designer whose prints disseminated the Louis XIV style across Europe. His works, often after designs by Jean Berain, were widely copied and reissued. Gottfried Stein was an engraver active in Augsburg who reproduced French ornamental designs for the German market. Biography artist: Jean Berain the Elder (1640-1711) was a French designer and draughtsman at the court of Louis XIV. Known for his refined grotesque and ornamental style, he designed stage sets, interior decorations, and ornamental prints that defined the decorative vocabulary of the late 17th century.
