Biography engraver: Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) was an Italian etcher, architect, and designer renowned for his dramatic views of Rome and influential decorative designs. Through his engravings, especially the Carceri and the Diverse Maniere, he became one of the most influential figures in the development of Neoclassicism across Europe.
