Antique print, titled: ”Vagabond with Bottle.” – Portrait of a vagabond with a wine bottle at his feet, seated on the steps of a stone bridge. Numbered and dated (1956/116) in pencil lower left, signed in pencil lower right.Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Wladimir Sagal’. Vladimir Sagalowitz (named Sagal) (1898-1969) was born in in Vitebsk (Russia). He studied art in Germany, moving to France in 1933. When the Second World War broke out, Sagal joined the French army. He was demobilized after France’s capitulation, but when Germany declared war on Russia in June 1941, Sagal was interned at Saint-Sulpice-la-Pointe near Toulouse. While in this camp he painted portraits of his fellow inmates. In 1943 he managed to escape and reach Switzerland. His works from the period of his internment are included in the art collection of Beit Lohamei Haghetaot (the Ghetto Fighters’ House Museum). Condition: Good, given age. Two small tape remains from attachment to matting in the far left margin. Faint ghosting from matting around the image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
